[applause]. >> . >> mike: thank you, thank you very much. what a great audience we've got here in the studio and welcome to huckabee from the fox news studios in new york city. all right, the biggest story this week in politics was the first presidential debate in denver. the first view, even among the staunchest obama supporters was that romney won the debate convincingly and one left of center commentator four years ago had a tingle up his leg hearing obama speak. waste in a such a meltdown over the poor performance this time he had a tingle run down his leg because he wet his pants. (laughter) >> and some of the excuses to try to explain the president not being much better than the empty chair that clint'swood revealed to us were simply
5:02 pm
bizarre. al gore thought it was the altitude of denver. i think the former vice-president may have been a little high. but the most ridiculous excuse of all was offered by yet another left wing obama, on another network and this guy with a straight face suggested that obama didn't debate well because he was black. what? you mean after getting elected president of the united states, and serving almost four years, barack obama suddenly walked out on the stage and said, oh, my gosh, i'm black, i can't take on this white guy. look, whether in sports, music, acting or politics, some days you just don't have a the juice, but we squeezed out what we could from the debate and i'll offer my humble, but absolutely accurate assessment of the event. first of all, here is mitt romney countering what the obama campaign is saying about his tax proposal. >> i've got five boys, i'm used to people saying something that's not always
5:03 pm
true, but keep on repeating it and ultimately hoping i'll believe it. >> let me just say this was a brilliant rhetorical device on the part of mitt romney for a couple of reasons, first of all, by invoking the story of his sons, it really brought a sense of connection to mitt romney as a father. he's raised kids. he is more like us at least in that regard. countering one of the great criticisms of mitt romney that he doesn't understand the rest of people. that showed a connection. the fact that his boys had told him, let's just say funny business like everybody does to their parents, that, too, said, yeah, it must be pretty normal after all at the romney house, but then the subtle device was this, he was actually saying, you know, it doesn't matter whether you're my sons in my house or whether you're president, if you keep telling me something that's not true over and over, i'm not so crazy as to believe it. it was a powerful moment and yet, he did it within a way that everybody could smile and
5:04 pm
not even realize what a powerful hit he had. and mitt romney also responded to obama's criticism that some corporate tax breaks would send jobs overseas. >> the second topic, which you said you get a deduction for taking a plant overseas, look i've been in business for 25 years, i have no idea what you're talking about, i maybe need a new accountant. the idea that you get a break for shipping jobs overseas is simply not the case. >> a great line and i've been in the business 25 years, translation, you haven't been. and i understand what business is all about, translation, you don't. i need a new accountant, translation, we need a new president. it was a brilliant line. i don't know if that was all planned or spontaneous, either way, it really connected. and great moment for him. now, here is president obama hitting romney for not giving some specifics. >> he says that he's going to replace dodd frank, wall
5:05 pm
street reform, but we don't know exactly which ones. he won't tell us, he now says's going to replace obamacare and assure all the good things in it are going to be in there and you don't have to worry. and at some point, i think, the american people have to ask themselves is the reason that governor romney is keeping all of these plans to replace secret because they're too good? >> objectiokay, a great line by president obama, it was about ten past the hour in the second hour of the debate. and i was remembering as i was keeping a flow sheet of the debate parking and saying this was the first really good moment that i thought the president had had all night. and i marked it as saying, this is the first time he's really left a mark on mitt romney. now, it wasn't a knockout blow or anything like that, not a knockdown, a moment when he was able to say something that showed that he was actually in denver for the debate because
5:06 pm
up until that moment, i'm not sure if he was pre-celebrating his anniversary, i don't know. but he had not tuned into the same debate that 67 million other people had tuned into. now, here is president obama touting what he's done for education. >> we've got a program called race to the top that has prompted reforms in 46 states around the country, raising standards, improving how we train teachers so now i want to hire another 100,000 new math and science teachers and create 2 million more slots in our community colleges so that people can get trained for the jobs that are out there right now. and i want to make sure that we keep tuition low for our young people. >> mike: and i want to make sure that everybody's christmas stocking is filled with everything they've wanted when it comes christmas time. one little problem about what he's saying, not about race to the top. it's not a bad program, pied emphasis and i commend arnie duncan for at least saying we ought to reward people who are
5:07 pm
doing well. it's different in the economy where we punish people who are doing well. i wish the president's education policies are based on that premise, clearly they're not. when he talks about, we need to put 100,000 new teachers in the classroom, i just asked myself. when is it the responsibility the federal government to go hire teachers for a local school board. your schools are your responsibility in your community. and in your state. and there's not one thing in the federal government constitution that says that the federal government ought to hire teachers for you, if you think you need more teachers, then you ought to hire them at your local level and let your school board decide who they are and what they teach. it wasn't just-- (applause) >> what the candidates said by the way that made the difference, i think it was their body language that spoke volumes. you're watching the split scene and see the difference. when mitt romney spoke to the president, he spoke to the president, looked at him.
5:08 pm
unfortunately the president never looked back and as you can see, through most of the debate, people who watched it, i think, were stunned to see the president seemingly unable, unwilling to even look at his opponent, mitt romney. he looked down, he looked around, i think he was look for the exit. i'm pretty sure that's what he was looking for, and praying that what he was looking at below, is this a trap door somewhere down there. because he could have used it. anyway, quite a moment. well, romney set the bar pretty high for the second debate, but can he stay on top in their next face-off? joining me now is former communications director for michele bachmann's complain. and for rudy guiliani, george. minges, and jake, were you at the debate. were you back in the spin room. what was different in person than what we saw on tv.
5:09 pm
>> well, i think i think that it was an absolute knockout punch and actually what i saw on television, what we saw live i thought was the same thing and shocked anybody could have come away from that debate with any other opinion, it was a knockout and i think what we saw when you removed the teleprompters and removed a panel of liberal press that can back up the president he's lost. the emporer has no clothes. and i thought that was very apparent, whether you were in the audience or watching on television. >> i think that's true. i think he could certainly learn a less sop. you people don't realize what you said now, you're not using that teleprompter, you're speaking from your heart and based on fact. >> mike: that's why i mess up a lot. >> that's not true. he didn't have the basic knowledge, didn't have the facts to back up. he was unable to defend his record, on defense the entear time and a sense of him walking in there i'm the leader of the freeway world and i don't need to with a waste my time here, the as a matter of fact of the matter is as a presidential candidate that's a level playing field.
5:10 pm
he and mitt romney are two men, face-to-face debating the issues and he felt as though he was too good for that. looking away, writing notes and thought of his poll numbers dropping back stage. he clearly felt he was too good to be there, but the fact is he demonstrated he can't defend his record and mitt romney showed not only is he a good leader and has executive experience and able to show the president that he has leadership ability, he's likeable, too, and able to show that. >> and there was no passion, governor when he's talking about the economy, the president has no passion, he doesn't understand what he's talking about and he doesn't believe it and saw mitt romney for the first time, a guy who is understands the economy, he looked presidential and people saw for the first time not through the lens of the negative obama tag machine here is a guy ready to lead our countries. >> mike: let me get michael in. you're a speech writer and written for a president. how does mitt romney take this great moment and make sthat he next debate? the expectation are going to
5:11 pm
be sky high on him and poor or low for obama. >> when you take the hill you've got to hold the hill. we've got a preview from president obama what the attack is looking at. that romney is lying in other words, to cover a radical agenda and i think, you know, romney is going to have to responsibled patiently and substantively and turn it to a more aggressive side against obama's record and values. and i think the man who showed up in denver can do that. president obama will be better in the next debate. he could hardly be worse. so, i-- (laughter) >> , but (applause) >> that's like saying the mets mets are going to have a better season, michael. the manner in which he failed in that debate by being passive, dictates thats' going to have to be aggressive and that presents a challenge for the the president. because when he's on the offensive, he often seems
5:12 pm
petulant. he has a tendency not just to criticize, but to mock. and i don't think that comes across particularly well on television, so, it's possible that he will overshift, overreact in this case, and do something that would be destructive. >> you have been back stage after one of the debates with me and with michele bachmann and rick santorum and one of these days with a winner. >> will be with you. >> mike: thank you, but seriously, you've been back stage after the debates when we've had great moments and candidates had bad moments. talk about what it's like bag stage when obama walks off that stage and his handlers are trying to be polite, but nothing nice to say. >> obviously, just the mere fact they didn't rush him to the spin room and try to say, great job by the president. they were back stage figuring out what they were going to say in terms of spinning it and showing that romney was lying and the truth is his problem all along he surrounds himself with a bunch of yes people that go along with exactly what he says and not people that will tell him what
5:13 pm
he needs to hear and this is what you have to say to defend your record and this is what you have to to in order to show people that you have a better plan for the future. as opposed to what they do is, they spent the whole time after the debate showing that romney was factually incorrect which was not true and instead of talking about what he said during the debate. before the debate. talked about here is what you need to say in the debate and arm choir quarterbacking-- >> very ill prepared clearly. and this week, paul ryan and joe biden will be squaring off. don't sell joe biden short. and the panel stays with us, we'll be right back. i'd love to hear from you, go to my website, mike huckabee.con and the feedback session or twitter. find me at mikehuckabee.com. gave it greater horsepower and best in class 38 mpg highway...

(laughter) >> i'm waiting to see some video of president obama come out of the white house on tuesday when the trash truck comes by, hold it, hold it, i haven't hugged you yet. look, folks, we-- we appreciate your trashman, but we don't hug him. he may be wearing our neighbor's dinner from last night, still on-- i don't think that's something we do. it is ridiculous and frankly demeaning ad. surely they can do better. well, tkts attacking mitt romney, mitt romney the mormon. why is his faith now fair game in the political mud slinging? idaho congressman and fellow

each day hear >> each weekday here my commentary on the radio show, details at mikehuckabee.com. >> democrats in the mainstream media have been making mitt romney's faith is issue in the race. the best example last week from harry reid who, like governor romney, is a mormon and he he's come to go a state where there's a lot of members of the lds church and they understand he's not the face of mormonism, end quote. i wonder, does harry think he is? my question, why is the republican nominee's faith such a sore topic with his opposition? joining me is idaho congressman raul labrador also a mormon and i think he's at his son's football game, is that right, congressman? >> that's what we mormons do on a saturday morning, watch

[applause] >> i want to talk to you about, to me, ridiculous attacks on mitt romney and his faith, from no less than harry reid who is a member of the same church. does this surprise you, congressman? and how do you, as a fellow mormon, respond to that? >> you know, it's-- harry reid says a the lot of strange things and almost has no shame. i grew up in las vegas and i actually know his family and it sometimes surprises me he his reputation many years ago when i lived in las vegas he was a moderate democrat who could work with both sides of the aisle. once he became a member of leadership and all of a sudden he almost lost all sense of reason and all of his shame
5:47 pm
and last week they had to draw back one of his statements from his senatorial office because the statement is that he put out was false. it was demonstrably false. everything that he says, he has nothing to back it up. and now, he tries to put down mitt romney's faith, which i just don't really understand why he's doing that. >> mike: congressman, if hopens get into mitt romney's faith and where he goes to church, does not that open the door for us to go back and revisit reverend jeremiah wright and all of the aspects of president obama's faith? >> you know, in my opinion, i don't think so. i think we've litigated that issue, we know where barack obama was for 20 years at church. he keeps hiding what he was, but the born thing is that mitt romney actually has policies that are going to be better for america than barack obama. barack obama has a record of four years of failure. mitt romney has a lifetime of

success. and i think that's what this election is going to be about. and i think it's totally inappropriate for harry reid or any other person in the democratic party to bring up mitt romney's faith. and i don't think we should play that game on our side. >> mike: well, let me say congressman, you look pretty normal to me. two of my very favorite public servants in the world, michael leavitt, a dear, dear friend of mine for many, many years, we were governors together and orrin hatch i think one of the most respectable and truly statesman-like senators in the entire united states senate and both are members of the lds church. nothing in any of their careers over several decades that should give anyone any concern as to whether anyone of the lds church is capable of serving in the church and doing it with integrity and honor. does that help as a great platform if people are worried about mitt romney, to see the people who have served in public offers and there are quite a few of them, who

served with honor and distinction, integrity and great competence? >> i think so. i think there's a long list of public servants who are of the lds faith. unfortunately, we also have harry reid, which is sometimes a drag for us. now around 41 million that support the tea party principles are people that work, take care of their kids and go to the football games like we saw with the congressman in idaho, and not people who spent a great deal of time in politics and haven't had time in the past and that's changed now and turned those political know novices into fully engaged and fully functioning political activists in the field. >> mike: it's pretty typical in any spontaneous movement, which the tea party was, there becomes a paint they become to assimilate into the institutions that they first railed against and seek to change and become part of the change. is that part of what we're seeing in the tea party, they're getting in the county committees and becoming members of congress and therefore, becoming part of the institution? >> certainly, we are trying to change the institution, that's been our purpose since the very beginning was to, is to put people into office and leaders that would represent some type of fiscal responsibility. what's happened with our country from a fiscal standpoint has been insane.
5:55 pm
so, we are putting people into office. the tea party is nonpartisan and we don't endorse candidates and don't cater to either party, but as for, you can ask a lot of, like arlan spector or senator luger in indiana, has the tea party gone away? they will he' tell you, no, the tea party is basically they all lost their races. >> mike: they were, i think, early on, a lot of concerns tea party people weren't that warm in mitt romney. has that changed? >> yeah, i think we're seeing more and more of the governor at this point. what's happened we realized that we've fought hard for the candidates and supported in the primary what we're supposed to doen coalesce and come together for our can candidate or the candidate that represents the most fiscal sanity in the general election. i think we're seeing more and more people realize that romney is light years ahead of barack obama even with what other faults some of us may thing he has. >> are we going to see a tea
